Charlotte, NC (News)—An early morning apartment complex blaze left three residents and a firefighter with non-life threatening injuries on Thursday, February 25, 2010. The two-alarm fire reportedly broke out at the Somerstone and Winding Trail apartment complex, located on Albemarle Road in east Charlotte, North Carolina, according to information provided by the Charlotte Observer.

Firefighters were dispatched to the scene of the residential fire at approximately 3:10 a.m. where they allegedly encountered heavy smoke and flames, which spread from the first floor of the apartment to the second. Due to the alleged severity of the blaze, a second alarm was called in. The fire took approximately an hour and nearly 60 firefighters to extinguish. It was reported that two residents, a woman and child, had to be rescued from the second-floor balcony of the complex after they apparently had no other means of escape.

Emergency medical services (EMS) crews from Medic allegedly transported three residents to Carolinas Medical Center to be treated for smoke inhalation. A firefighter was taken to Presbyterian Hospital after reportedly slipping on blaze rubble and suffering an ankle injury while battling the inferno. Five units of the apartment were destroyed in the complex blaze. The American Red Cross has reportedly provided nine residents with temporary shelter. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
