CPSC alert-Discovery Kids animated lamps were recalled due to fire hazard.
Foothill Ranch, CA—Nearly 360,000 Discovery Kids Animated Marine and Safari Lamps were voluntarily recalled by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) http://www.cpsc.gov/ and Innovage LLC due to a fire and burn hazard. The voluntary recall was announced on Tuesday, February 9, 2010, as reported by the CPSC.
The recall of the Discovery Kids Animated Marine and Safari Lamps was prompted after a defect in the lamp’s printed circuit board was discovered. The lamps can cause an electrical short, thus posing a fire and burn hazard to consumers. So far, there have been nine reports of incidents, with seven of these reports were about lamps catching on fire. Another report was of a child who suffered smoke inhalation, and three others involving minor property damage. The Animated Marine Lamp number model numbers are 1627121 or 1628626, and the Animated Safari Lamp has model number 1627124 or 1628626, which is found on the bottom of the packaging. All model numbers have batch numbers that begin with “2,” which is an 11-digit number located on the bottom of each unit. The lamps are the silver and feature rotating films with marine or safari scenes. The words “Discovery Kids” is imprinted on the front top left corner. The lamps were sold at mass merchandisers, department, drug and hardware stores across the country, as well as online and direct sales from July 2009 through January 2102, for the retail price of $10.
