Florida aviation accident lawyer alerts- FAA to investigate how a piece of a cargo plane broke off and crashed into a Miami International Mall parking lot.

Doral, FL—A large piece of a cargo plane, en route from Santiago, Chile to Miami, Florida, fell from the sky, subsequently crashing into a vacant portion of a parking lot on Friday, February 5, 2010. The incident occurred at 11:30 a.m. in a Miami International Mall parking lot. The plane reportedly went on to land safely at Miami International Airport after the incident, according to information provided by the Miami Herald.

Witnesses at the scene were apparently unaware of what had fallen from the sky upon seeing the nearly 18-foot, 150-pound piece of fiberglass crash into an unoccupied portion of the parking lot. Thankfully, no one was injured in the incident. The fairing, which “covers the mechanism that controls the flaps on the wings” of the Atlas Air Cargo 747 freightliner, broke off for unknown reasons.

A former senior investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) allegedly noted that though it is uncommon for aircraft parts to fall to the ground, it is obviously not impossible. A similar incident reportedly occurred in 2004 when a portion of a Federal Express jumbo jet fell into a parking lot in north Fort Worth, Texas. No one was reported injured in that incident either.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) http://www.faa.gov and officials from Atlas Air Inc. are conducting investigations into the incident to figure out what may have caused the fairing to become dislodged from the airliner.
