Lake Forest, IL—Two alleged train track trespassers were struck by an oncoming Amtrak train in Lake Forest, Illinois, killing one and injuring the other. The unfortunate train-pedestrian collision occurred at 5:45 p.m. Friday, February 5, 2010, according to information provided by the Chicago Sun-Times. The Amtrak train was reportedly en route from Chicago to Milwaukee when the pedestrian-involved crash happened.
Though some reports stated only one person was struck in the fatal incident, the Lake County coroner allegedly stated two pedestrians were walking along the tracks when the Amtrak Hiawatha Line train 339 struck them near Conway Road, which is located north of the Lake Forest Metra station.
One of the pedestrians was pronounced dead at the scene after suffering severe injuries on impact of the train. Another person reportedly sustained injuries in the incident and had to be transported to an area hospital for treatment by doctors and nurses. The extent of the pedestrian’s injuries was unknown. The victims’ identities have not been released pending family notification. None of the 138 passengers aboard the locomotive were reported injured.
It was reported that all southbound trains were stopped at 7 p.m. while northbound trains were traveling at “walking speed”. Accident investigations are underway.
