Product liability attorneys alert- Toyota recalled 2.3 million vehicles to address the accelerator pedal problem.

West Palm Beach, FL—Toyota announced on Thursday, January 21, 2010, they are recalling 2.3 million vehicles within the U.S. to address the accelerator pedals that can become stuck. This recall comes just months after Toyota Motor Corporation recalled 4.2 million vehicles due to concerns that the floor mats can lodge the accelerator in the engage position, as reported by FOX News.

Toyota has recalled the 2009-2010 RAV4, the 2009-2010 Corolla, the 2009-2010 Matrix, the 2005-2010 Avalon, the 2007-2010 Camry, the 2010 Highlander, the 2007-2010 Tundra and the 2008-2010 Sequoia. The recall was prompted after a potential problem with the actual gas pedal mechanism was discovered, which causes the pedal to become stuck regardless whether there is a floor mat in the vehicle or not. Toyota reported in some rare instances, the gas pedal mechanism can wear down, which makes it harder to press accelerator, slower to return, or in some cases become stuck. The problems appeared to be related to the potential build-up of condensation on the sliding surfaces in the accelerator system, which aids the drivers in pushing down and releasing the gas pedal. A Toyota spokesperson stated they do not have a solution to the problem at this time, but they are working towards one.

Toyota has recommended that rivers of the recalled vehicles should “firmly apply their brakes if the gas pedal becomes stuck — not pump the brakes — and contact their nearest Toyota dealer after parking in a safe location.”
