Natural gas explosion destroyed Elgin, Oregon home; 6 injured

Union County, OR—A natural gas explosion engulfed a home in flames and sent six people the hospital on Tuesday night, January 12, 2010. Representatives from the gas company were in the neighborhood checking for gas leaks when a nearby house exploded around 9:00 p.m., on the 700 block of Elma Avenue, as reported by ChicagoBreakingNews.com.

Six people were rushed by emergency medical services (EMS) teams to Sherman and Provena St. Joseph hospitals in Elgin and St. Alexius Hospital in Hoffman Estates. Two of the victims were in critical condition, one in seriously, and three who appeared to have sustained non-life threatening injuries. Firefighters were reportedly forced to let the home at 708 Elma Avenue to burn to the ground because Nicor Gas employees had not shut off the gas to the home. Nicor officials were reportedly in the neighborhood looking for suspected gas leaks when suddenly the house exploded. Nearby residents were evacuated from their homes just in case another explosion occurred. Police officials are investigating the incident.

The Red Cross and Elgin, West Dundee, South Elgin, Carpentersville, Pingree Grove, Streamwood, Bartlett and Hoffman Estates emergency crews, and Nicor crews all responded to the scene of the blast.
