Fatal motor vehicle collision involving school bus left one dead, four injured in Mississippi.
Marshall County, MS—One person was tragically killed in a two-vehicle crash involving a school bus on Tuesday morning, January 5, 2010, according to information provided by Action News 5. The fatal traffic accident reportedly occurred north of Holly Springs on Highway 7.
The Holly Springs Police Department allegedly stated that the motor vehicle collision (MVC) occurred around 7:40 a.m. when a car, carrying one adult and four children, allegedly struck a patch of ice. This initial impact sent the car swerving out of control into the lane in which the Holly Springs Municipal Separate School system bus was traveling and collided with it.
Three Air Wing helicopters as well as three ambulances were dispatched to the scene with emergency medical services (EMS) crews to transport the injured to hospitals to be treated by doctors and nurses. It was reported that Roddrick Isom, 9, was sadly killed in the wreck. The four other occupants of the vehicle allegedly sustained injuries in the crash and were transported to hospitals by responding medical professions to receive treatment. None of the students riding on the bus sustained injuries in the vehicle collision. Another school bus retrieved students from the scene and transported them to school after the accident. Counseling was allegedly provided for those students involved.
Police officials reportedly stated that ice on the road caused the incident. After the initial crash scene had been cleared, it was noted that workers from the Holly Springs Utility Department responded to that area on Highway 7 with line detectors and heavy-duty utility equipment due to a water main leak that was allegedly reported in August. The Mississippi Department of Transportation reportedly only told the city to take care of the leak on Monday, January 4, 2010.
