Train hits two teens, one dead, one in critical condition; Ohio State Highway Patrol investigates.
Holland, OH— Amtrak’s Capitol Limited train struck two Springfield High School students, tragically killing one and leaving the other in critical condition on Wednesday morning, December 16, 2009, according to the Toledo Blade. The teens were allegedly walking to school around 7 a.m. when a quickly approaching train struck them as they were crossing the Norfork Southern railroad train tracks, according to reports from the Ohio State Highway Patrol (ODPS).
Cody Brown, 15, was fatally injured upon impact of the train. Emergency medical services (EMS) crews transported the badly injured 16-year-old, Brianna Mullinger, to the University of Toledo Medical Center to be treated for the serious injuries she acquired due to the horrifying incident. The sophomore is reportedly in critical condition. It was reported that none of the 170 passengers or crew members sustained any injuries as a result of the incident.
The ODPS officer allegedly reported that the railroad crossing gates were down and the lights were flashing. The train also supposedly sounded its horn before the teens were hit. Whether the students were running or walking across the train tracks is unknown by accident investigators. The speed limit where the teens were struck by the train is 79 mph.
A forward-looking camera is stationed on the train, which officials have authorization to view for investigatory purposes upon request.
