Orlando, FL—A teenager was seriously injured after his car slammed into a Lake County Schools bus. The school bus crash happened on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 on Hartwood Marsh Road just east of the Hancock Road intersection, as reported by the Orlando Sentinel.

According to Lake County Schools officials, Derek Sheiman, 16, was driving his 1994 four-door Buick westbound on Hartwood Marsh. A school bus, which was transporting four special needs students, was also traveling eastbound on Hartwood Marsh. Sheiman then crossed the centerline and crashed into the school bus. The Buick reportedly sideswiped the bus, which left him trapped inside his badly damaged vehicle. Area rescue crews had to cut Sheiman out of his damaged car. The school bus also sustained serious damage to the driver’s side of the bus. Sheiman was transported by area emergency medical services (EMS) crews to South Lake Hospital for treatment of his injuries. The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reported Shieman’s injuries were not life threatening. The four students on the bus, and the bus driver were not injured in the wreck. The driver was evaluated by EMS teams, released, and given the rest of the day off. The school bus was reportedly on its way to the Princeton House in Orlando when the crash occurred. The four special needs students were transported the rest of the way to school by another school bus. Shieman was issued a citation for failure to maintain a single lane.
