Winter Haven, FL—A multiple vehicle pile-up along I-4 involving 48 vehicles left at least four people injured. The 48-vehicle crash happened on Sunday afternoon, September 28, 2009 around 4:43 p.m., on the westbound lanes of I-4, three miles west of U.S. Highway 27, as reported by the News Chief.

The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reported, a series of minor vehicle crashes along the westbound lanes of I-4 involved up to 48 motor vehicles. The first crash started a chain reaction of 23 other vehicle crashes. FHP officials stated the contributing causes for the massive pile-up were rain, wet road conditions, and high traffic volume. Four people were injured as a result of the wrecks, and were transported by area emergency medical services (EMS) crews to local hospitals for treatment of their injuries. Reportedly, none of the injuries sustained in the wreck were life threatening. It is currently unknown how the chain-reaction crashes occurred, or how it was started. Polk County Sheriff’s Office reported the westbound traffic on I-4 was backed up for six miles from the crash scene during the investigation and clean up. The FHP is reportedly conducting a full investigation into the massive 48-vehicle pile-up along I-4. At this time no one has been cited in connection with the wreck.
