Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg said on Sunday she would skip next month’s COP27 talks in Egypt and criticized the world summit as a forum for “greenwashing”.

“I’m not going to COP27 for many reasons, but the space for civil society this year is extremely limited,” she said during a question-and-answer session at the launch of her latest book at London’s Southbank Centre.

The 19-year-old activist previously took to Twitter to express his solidarity with “political prisoners” being held in Egypt ahead of the 27th UN Climate Change Conference which opens on November 6 in the Red Sea resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh will.

“The COPs are mainly used as an opportunity for leaders and those in power to garner attention by using many different types of greenwashing,” she said.

The COP conferences, she added, “shouldn’t really change the whole system,” but rather encourage incremental progress.

“As it is, the COPs don’t really work unless we use them as an opportunity to mobilize, of course.”

Thunberg’s “The Climate Book” published on Thursday contains around 100 contributions from various experts, including economist Thomas Piketty, WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and writer Naomi Klein.

Thunberg’s royalties from the book go to her eponymous foundation, which she distributes to non-profit organizations working on environmental issues.

The activist said she wanted the book to be “educational, which is a bit ironic since school strikes are my thing,” referring to her protests outside the Swedish parliament from 2018.

Thunberg repeatedly called on more people on Sunday to get involved in climate activism. The time has come for “dramatic changes” to the status quo.

“To change things, we need all — we need billions of activists,” she said.
