San Francisco Bay, CA—An Altamont Commuter Express (ACE) train en route to Manteca collided with a Nissan pickup truck killing the driver of the truck. The tragic accident occurred on Monday, July 27, 2009 at 4:35 a.m., as reported by the San Jose Mercury News.
The driver of the pickup truck was identified as, Jeffery Donald Walters, 48, of Stockton, according to the San Joaquin County Coroner’s office. Accident investigators say the No. 1 ACE train smashed into the Nissan truck while it was sitting on the railroad tracks at Roth Road. The ACE train reportedly hit the truck at speeds around 72 mph. Officials stated the speed limit in the area is 79 mph for trains. It is unknown why the truck was on the tracks in the first place. The railroad guard arms are reportedly working properly. There were no reports injuries among the 41 passengers on board the ACE train at the time of the collision.
