A Chinese former top security official faces life imprisonment after a court on Friday sentenced him to a suspended death sentence for bribery and other crimes, sparking a spate of corruption sentences in recent days.

Sun Lijun’s death sentence will be commuted to life imprisonment after two years, according to a statement by the Intermediate People’s Court in Changchun city.

Chinese authorities have announced a spate of high-profile rulings this week as an anti-graft campaign is in full swing ahead of a political meeting next month at which President Xi Jinping is expected to receive an unprecedented third term.

More than a million officials have been fined under the campaign, which critics say is also a way for Xi to oust political enemies.

The court said Sun, who was previously deputy minister for public security, abused his power in a number of influential positions between 2001 and 2020.

The 53-year-old pleaded guilty in July to taking more than 646 million yuan ($91 million) in bribes.

His other offenses included manipulation of the securities market and illegal possession of firearms, the court statement said.

“[He will be]stripped of political rights for life and all personal property should be confiscated,” it said.

“Sun Lijun took a particularly large amount of bribes to secure job promotions and accommodation for many people,” the statement continued.

Sun was previously head of Hong Kong’s security department when the semi-autonomous city was rocked by pro-democracy protests.

Since Xi came to power a decade ago, he has campaigned against corruption in the ruling Communist Party, vowing to crack down on both high-profile “tiger” officials and lower-level “flies.”

And with the party congress looming, held twice a decade in mid-October, Xi has upped the pace, with several big names falling under the wheels of the campaign this week alone.

China’s opaque courts are subordinate to the Communist Party and have a nearly 100 percent conviction rate.

Former Justice Minister Fu Zhenghua was sentenced to life imprisonment on Thursday for accepting bribes worth more than 117 million yuan.

Before entering semi-retirement in May 2020, Fu is said to have orchestrated the corruption investigation into former security chief Zhou Yongkang, who was jailed in 2015 in what is arguably the campaign’s best-known case to date.

Three former police chiefs were also handed heavy sentences on corruption charges on Wednesday, after they were accused of being part of Sun’s “political clique.”

These included Gong Dao’an, former Shanghai police chief; Deng Huilin, former Chongqing Police Chief; and Liu Xinyun, former police chief of coal-rich Shanxi Province.

Gong, a former deputy mayor and director of the Shanghai Public Security Bureau, was sentenced to life imprisonment for accepting 73.43 million yuan in bribes, state broadcaster CCTV reported.

Deng, the former director of the Chongqing Public Security Bureau, was sentenced to 15 years in prison for taking 42.67 million yuan in bribes, according to the same newspaper.

Liu, the former top police officer in Shanxi, was jailed for 14 years for accepting 13.33 million worth of bribes, CCTV said.
