WASHINGTON, DC, Sept. 21, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Today the US House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Commerce passed the Prevent All Soring Tactics (PAST) ActHR 5441, by a vote of 46 to 9 in a premium that will now bring the measure to the House floor for a vote.

The content of this action has been presented at every Congress since 2012. PAST would amend the Horse Protection Act (HPA) of 1970 to end sores — the intentional infliction of pain on the front legs of Tennessee Walking, Racking, and Spotted Saddle Horses by applying harsh chemicals to the skin or inserting sharp objects into them the hooves to achieve this artificial high step known as “Big Lick” that is appreciated in small rural parts of Alabama, Tennessee and Kentucky. Head of Animal Wellness Action have opted for passage the bill with Executive Director Marty Irby testified in support of the measure in a 2013 subcommittee hearing on the legislation.

Animal welfare action today submitted a letter and more than 50 pages of supporting materials to the House Energy and Commerce Committee for further supplementation 330 plus pages submitted during the May subcommittee hearing on the bill and subsequent documentation during the PAST Act subcommittee awards ceremony a few months ago.
