Lynden, WA—A two-and-half month old baby boy held on his mothers lap tragically died on Tuesday, July 21, 2009 after a head-on collision with an 18-wheeler. The accident occurred on State Route 546 at Northwood Road at around 10:45 p.m., as reported by King5.com.
The tragic collision happened when the Ford Explorer the mother, baby and the driver were traveling in crossed the centerline and smacked head-on into a semi truck. The baby boy was being held in his mother’s lap wrapped in a blanket when he was ejected on impact from the car. The baby landed in the road where a passersby found him, and attempted to resuscitate him. The unidentified 26-year-old mother suffered serious internal and pelvis injuries and was transported by area emergency medical service (EMS) crews to St. Johns Hospital in Bellingham and then was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. The driver of the SUV fled on foot. Helicopters with the Border Patrol and Whatcom County sheriff’s dogs were dispatched to search for the missing man. According to police the injured woman spoke an unfamiliar form of Spanish, which made it difficult for rescuers and investigators to communicate with her. Empty beer bottles were reportedly found in the damaged SUV.
