A gunman killed one person and wounded two others in a shootout at a military facility in Bangkok on Wednesday, Thai police told AFP.

Deputy national police spokeswoman Kissana Phathanacharoen said a suspect was arrested after the incident at the Army Training Command Department, which is part of a large complex of military buildings north of the capital.

Local media reported that the suspect is a soldier, although the motives behind the shooting were not immediately clear.

“The shooting left one dead and two injured, the local police brought the situation under control,” Kissana Phathanacharoen told AFP.

“We can already arrest a suspect.”

In 2020, a soldier shot 29 people and injured dozens more in a 17-hour shooting spree before being shot dead by commandos in an incident that shocked Thailand.

This mass shooting was linked to a debt dispute between armed sergeant-major Jakrapanth Thomma and a high-ranking officer, and the military leadership strove to portray the killer as a renegade soldier.

The military has a powerful influence on many aspects of life in Thailand, from politics to the economy, and has intervened to seize power numerous times over the decades, most recently in 2014.
