Rosalind “Roz” Brewer, CEO of Walgreens Boots Alliance, joined the board of tech-enabled primary care startup VillageMD along with Dr. David Brailer, former National Health IT Coordinator at the Department of Health and Human Services.

last year, Walgreens Announces $5.2 Billion Investment in VillageMD, on top of investing $1 billion into the company in 2020. Through these investments, Walgreens acquired a controlling stake in VillageMD, owning a 63% stake in the primary care company.

The two companies partnered to open in-store primary clinics at Walgreens across the country. The companies outlined plans to open 500 VillageMD clinics in Walgreens stores in more than 30 U.S. markets by 2025 and 1,000 by 2027. By the end of 2021, the two companies have opened more than 80 clinics. In early 2022, VillageMD and Walgreens opened primary care clinics in southern New Hampshire and Florida.

Brewer joins Walgreens in March 2021 After three years as Starbucks COO. Before joining Starbucks, she was president and CEO of Sam’s Club for five years and prior to that as president of the Walmart division.

Joining her on the board will be Brailer, the first national health information technology coordinator who served under President George W. Bush from 2004 to 2006. He currently serves as executive chairman of Health Evolution, a company that connects healthcare CEOs with payers, providers and life sciences organizations. Braier also serves on Walgreens’ board of directors.
