Humana is continuing to invest in primary care for seniors, with plans to operate as many as 260 medical centers in 12 states by the end of 2022.

Under Humana’s CenterWell and Conviva brands, the insurer’s primary care facility currently operates approximately 200 centers in nine states. The company plans to expand its CenterWell clinics to Arizona, Kentucky and Texas, and open 26 new sites this year. It did not specify a growth target for its Conviva division.

But the company’s clinic expansion was partly funded by a three-year, $600 million deal the company signed with private equity firm Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe. WCAS is the majority shareholder in the joint venture.

CenterWell and Conviva clinics currently serve 300,000 Medicare Advantage, Traditional Medicare and Medicaid patients and are available to individuals registered through carriers other than Humana. Their staff includes physicians, nurse practitioners, “nursing coaches,” clinical pharmacists, behavioral health specialists, and social workers.

By directing its 4.3 million Medicare Advantage members to outpatient visits and addressing the social determinants of their health needs, Humana aims to inspire better patient outcomes and reduce healthcare costs. Humana represents the second largest Medicare Advantage insurer in the United States, after UnitedHealthcare. Many of the insurer’s Conviva and CenterWell clinics are located in underserved areas, the company said.

“The elder-centered care we provide enables our physicians to spend more time with each patient,” said Renee Buckingham, president of Humana Primary Care, in a news release. “This personalized approach improves our patients’ lives and well-being, and driving growing demand for new centers in the U.S.”

The insurer’s investment in primary care represents a strategic reversal in the lines of Oak Street Health, Iora Health and ChenMed, as these clinics started out as providers and now seek to take financial risk on their patients. In addition to growing its own primary care brand, Humana has invested in all of these retail start-up clinic operators.

The insurer also recently hired a new president to lead its Growing Home Health Business, and a Chief Medical Officer Plan the route for its primary care services.
