Combining advanced cancer care with the comfort of the surrounding community, the San Antonio Proton Therapy Center in San Antonio will treat nearly 500 patients annually from south and west Texas and Mexico.

Developed by Proton International LLC (Alpharetta, GA), with the University of Texas Health as a clinical partner, the new 26,000-square-foot facility features simplicity of assembly and composition. The interlocking design connects the indoor spaces with the outdoor garden, creating a compact building that blends in with the natural environment.

The two-story facility provides dedicated areas to welcome patients, provide clinical care and therapy, support staff and accommodate complex equipment requirements. On arrival, patients and visitors are greeted by a spacious exterior canopy that leads to the main double-height lobby, with healing gardens to the east and west. The staff area extends behind the main façade and connects to the adjacent patio as a resting place.

To maximize the building’s presence on campus, the site is conceptually divided into parallel layers, with the Proton Building at the center.

There will be a healing garden on either side of the main building lobby and a stepped garden with an outdoor terrace next to the staff lounge. A third garden will be at the end of the healing corridor. New trees planted on the grid will be added on three sides of the property to provide a natural backdrop and shade to the building.
