The predecessor of the BMW 6 series is the E9, the 2800 CS model. This 1968 car introduced many design clues and features that we now consider to be a typical BMW: an inline six-cylinder engine (code-named M30), a longer nose, four headlights and kidney-shaped grille with front-end processing. It is BMW’s standard. It comes with a 4-speed manual, although the manual you see below has a 5-speed switch.

The new focus is on mainstream appeal, but we can trace BMW’s preference for luxury and sports back to this car and its predecessor in 2000.

The 2800CS is relatively light, 3131 pounds, about 168/180 horsepower, and 16-inch Alpina wheels with staggered widths. The 2800CS has been successful as a mid-size coupe and weekend racing. 3.0 CS and 3.0 CSi were substitutes in 1971-72.
