Dear patient reader,
Thank you very much for your thoughtful and touching words about my mother’s death on the website and via email. It means a lot to me.
Yesterday in Water Cooler, some of you gathered the idea of ??”hosting an NC mini fundraiser for Yves’ mom”. This is not only very generous, but also a way to help maintain the health of the community. The thread drift is that this will be specific to the site, but if some of you/most of you are considering donating to charities in her name instead of donating to charity in her name, please take care of it, because I don’t want to offend based on the following differences. There seems to be a consensus view in this discussion.
This week I have had to make a lot of decisions (including managing relatives) and lack of sleep, so it has become increasingly clear that even for a simple estate, the moving parts I have to deal with will require a lot of grease. Therefore, when I am facing a real estate crunch, fundraising activities will help support Lambert, Jerry, and Nick to come forward as needed. In other words, I tend to make readers accept this very athletic suggestion, but I hope you can give me a few days…because this is another decision. 🙂

Hong Kong insists on “zero coronavirus” and extreme isolation. Talents are leaving in droves. Washington post. We will say now, don’t we? GM had to clear his throat alone:
Hong Kong will not give in at present (as long as the mainland insists on its position, it may never be)
And I don’t actually think they will suffer.
In the past two years, with increasing despair and silent fear, I have seen how academic research slowly collapsed. Many people still haven’t noticed it, but if you really notice it, it is inevitable. Many laboratories have just been dismantled during the lockdown and cannot be reorganized, because waves of destruction have occurred since then, collaboration networks have been destroyed, and there has been almost no vibrant exchange of ideas in the corridors. God, because people are scattered, etc. This place is basically no longer what it was before March 2020-it is now a bunch of shiny and gorgeous buildings, (some) people are still there, but this intangible factor makes it great and no longer exists .
Really, really depressed.
I can imagine that the R&D of technology companies has also been hit hard by all WFHs, but this has not yet been widely understood. At midnight, there is no substitute for two or more very smart people brainstorming in front of the whiteboard. You will only understand that once you arrive at that board after midnight and see the results of this exchange.
At the same time, I saw that all newspapers from China were doing things we planned to do at some point but were unable to do because of the entire interruption.
And they are actually attracting talent, which is the exact opposite of what is claimed-many world-class Chinese researchers working in American universities have just returned to China and they will stay there. America’s losses, China’s gains.
I started to see even non-Chinese people go there. Now is the case of some connected people. For example, the Chinese wife is a typical case, but as people slowly start to understand the future, especially if the Chinese make some efforts, this situation will change over time . The cultural adjustment process is smoother.
Of course, what kind of “talent” you care about is important-do you want to attract truly productive scientists and engineers, or is your definition of “talent” centered on financial parasites?

CDC shortens the quarantine period for positive people to 5 days

This is great-consistent with the evidence and data of contagion
