Current project: Our team recently completed data collection at Utah Valley Hospital to better understand how the onstage/offstage model works in inpatient and outpatient settings. We are also coordinating a study at the Sheltering Arms Institute in the inpatient rehabilitation hospital to explore the experience of patients and employees. Source of inspiration: I believe that design is the driving force for social change. Environmental design research highlights the ways in which the environment and environmental management can change and enhance the human experience. It is inspiring to play even the smallest role in the design of spaces that strengthen the community and have a profound impact on people’s lives.

The best advice you received: My father devoted his career to public service. He once told me: “If you don’t care who gets the credit, what you can achieve is amazing.” This sentence is usually attributed to President Harry S. Truman. I strive for collective interest rather than personal recognition. This may not be the best career strategy, but it is in line with my values.

The trend you are tracking: The rise of virtual health and other technologies during the pandemic is likely to continue to break down barriers, improve accessibility, and increase health equity. I hope to see this approach better combined with face-to-face visits to redistribute healthcare to underserved locations and populations.

Your industry crystal ball says: Although I don’t know what the future holds, I hope to see healthcare continue to meet with people. For me, this means not only changing the place of care to improve access, but also promoting health everywhere and eliminating the social determinants of health. The built environment affects public health and personal health in many ways. Design professionals have the power and responsibility to design all places and spaces, not just health care facilities, to improve health and well-being. Professionals in the healthcare industry will continue to play a leading role in creating a cultural shift towards health promotion.

Unforgettable moments of the epidemic: In the past year, what impressed me was all the human stories brought about by the pandemic. I will never forget that after COVID-19 first appeared in a local nursing facility, I read a story about a woman who could no longer visit her mother, so she climbed through the bushes to peek at the window, just trying to glance at her . Although there are too many such stories, there are also stories of bravery, selflessness and innovation. These stories remind me of the importance and value of healthcare design on a personal level, and why we must continue to design to meet new challenges.
