The head of one of the largest health care providers in Georgia is about to step down.

Emory University announced that Jonathan Lewin, CEO of Emory Healthcare, will leave after the new executives are elected.

Lewin also serves as executive vice president of health at Emory University and executive director of the Woodruff Health Science Center, which includes the university’s School of Medicine, Nursing, and Public Health. He will also leave these positions. He will join the faculty of Emory University.

Lewin said in a statement: “I cannot exaggerate the incredible privilege of leading the Woodruff Health Science Center and Emory Healthcare Center.” He added, “I am very happy to see that I am confident that I will continue to succeed. And grow this great institution and contribute to improving lives and providing hope in new ways.”

Lewin joined Emory University in 2016 after holding leadership positions at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Case Western Reserve University. The university stated that he led a major expansion of Emory Healthcare, including the purchase and development of new campuses in the Atlanta area, as well as the opening of the Emory University Hospital building, Atlanta Hawks practice and sports medicine facilities, and numerous outpatient sites. Operating income climbed to 5.5 billion U.S. dollars, an increase of more than 80%.

Lewin also established Emory Healthcare’s new welfare office to focus on the health and well-being of providers, and appointed the health system’s first Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer.

During Lewin’s tenure, Emory University’s research funding also increased significantly. The university announced Lewin’s departure on November 12.

Lewin appears on Modern Healthcare List of the most influential clinical executives in 2017.
