Byers is expected to be one of the headlines of the Tokyo Olympics, competing for six gold medals.
As American gymnasts continue to struggle with mental health issues, Simone Biles has withdrawn from the vault and uneven bars finals at the Tokyo Olympics on Saturday.
Bills was shocked earlier at the Tokyo Olympics, when she withdrew from the team competition after a bad opening vault, and then decided not to defend her all-around champion.
However, the 24-year-old may appear again at the Tokyo Olympics because she did not rule out Monday’s floor exercise and Tuesday’s competition.
“Today, after further consultations with medical staff, Simone Byers decided to withdraw from the vault and uneven bars finals,” the US gymnastics team said in a statement. “She will continue to be evaluated daily to determine whether to participate in the finals of floor exercise and balance beam.”
Byers is expected to be one of the headlines of the Tokyo Olympics to compete for six gold medals, which will make her the most successful women’s Olympian of all time.
But her pursuit was over almost before it started, when Byers completed a vault in the team game last Tuesday, then briefly sat down and left the field before returning to the sidelines to cheer for her teammates.
She later decided not to defend her Olympic all-around title won by teammate Sunisa Lee.
The decision to withdraw from two more finals means that Byers will not be able to defend the gold medal she won in the 2016 Rio Olympics.
MyKayla Skinner won the fourth highest vaulting result in the qualifying competition. She will participate in the American vault finals with Jade Carey, who has the second highest result.
Li will now be the only American to participate in the uneven bars finals.
‘tortuous’
Byers spoke very frankly about her decision. She said that she needs to consider her physical and mental health, because she will encounter “distorted” disorientation when using some anti-gravity skills.
On Friday, Byers wrote on Instagram: “Honestly, trying to do a skill without keeping your mind and body in sync is terrible.”
Byers has received strong support from everyone, from the former first lady Michelle Obama to the International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach, who praised her for her courage.
Bach, a fencing gold medalist at the 1976 Olympics, said: “I must personally say that I had the opportunity to at least have a brief conversation with her after the team competition… I really appreciate her way of handling this situation.”
“She admits that there is this problem. This is already commendable courage. Who would admit that a year ago [they] Do you have a mental health problem? “
