This fall, Will Smith will return to the big screen, starring in a biopic about tennis superstars Venus and Serena Williams, titled “King Richard.”
According to reports, the film will revolve around the growth of the Williams sisters and their “undisappointed father” Richard Williams (played by Smith) and his “game-changing tireless efforts and impeccable vision.” Hollywood Report.
Through a clear vision of his daughter’s career and perseverance, the film shows how Richard “played an important role in cultivating two of the most talented athletes of all time, who will ultimately change the sport of tennis forever.”
Warner Bros. released a powerful trailer for the movie, showing the sisters’ journey from Compton, California, to the global stage as some of the most famous athletes in the world.
“I wrote a 78-page plan for their entire career before they were born,” Richard said in the trailer.
The Williams sisters, played by Sanya Sidney and Demi Singleton, were trained by their father Richard since they were young, and later achieved great success in professional tennis. Venus is a seven-time Grand Slam champion and Serena is a 23-time champion.
“You will represent every little black girl on earth,” Richard said to Venus and Serena in the trailer.
Venus and Serena are the executive producers of the film, as well as their younger sister, Isha Price.
The movie will be released on November 19th and will be shown on HBO Max 31 days after it is shown in theaters. Just 10 days before the movie was released, Smith’s memoir “Will” Will be released.
This is the second time Smith has played a famous sports figure in a movie. In 2001, he was nominated for an Oscar for playing Muhammad Ali in Michael Mann’s Ali. ESPN report.
Aunjanue Ellis will play Oracene “Brandi” Williams, Richard’s wife, Serena and Venus’ mother. Tony Goldwyn plays coach Paul Cohen, and Jon Berthal plays coach Rick Macci. The film is directed by Marcus Green and written by Zach Bellin.
