After the women’s 4×100 freestyle relay team won the silver medal, Canada won the first medal for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Penny Oleksiak and Kayla Sanchez of Toronto, Margaret Mac Neil of London, Ontario and Rebecca Smith of Red Deer of Alta finished the race in 3 minutes and 32.78 seconds. Canada won the medal for the second consecutive time.

Australia won the gold medal with a world record time of 3:29.69, while the United States won the third place with 3:32.81.

Olekshak swam past the anchor leg and almost defeated the American Simone Manuel on the wall.

The Canadian women’s football team hopes to replicate their success in winning six medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Oleksiak and Taylor Ruck swam in the preliminaries but were replaced by McNeill in the final. They are the 16-year-old members of the relay team. They won the first medal for the Canadian team at the Rio Olympics.

Oleksiak continued to win the 100m freestyle gold medal and the 100m butterfly silver medal, and firmly locked the Canadian team on another bronze medal in the 4 x 200.
