According to official Syrian media reports, Syria’s air defense system intercepted Israeli attacks on the al-Safirah area in southern Aleppo, where Israel has repeatedly attacked the growing presence of Iran.

“On Monday around 23:37 [20:37 GMT] …Israeli enemies carried out air strikes in southeastern Aleppo, targeting positions in the al-Safira area,” the Syrian state news agency SANA quoted a military source as saying

“Our air defense system intercepted the missiles… shot down most of them,” it added, saying that it was still evaluating the damage.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, based in the United Kingdom, stated that the missile fell near the scientific research center in al-Safira, destroying bases and weapons depots used by pro-Iranian groups.

It said that no casualties were reported immediately.

A spokesman for the Syrian military told state media late Monday that the air defense system was assessing the damage after it had shot down most of the missiles aimed at some unspecified locations.

The Syrian opposition forces stated that the targets of the airstrikes were the Iranian Revolutionary Guards base and a weapons factory. This is Israel’s continuous attack on Iran’s military research and development activities in the past year.

The Syrian government has never admitted that the attack was aimed at Iranian assets and said it was limited to some consultants.

However, Syrian military sources claim that Iran has a strong presence in the northern Syrian province, including elite Revolutionary Guard officers at the Kuweires military air base 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) east of the city.

An Israeli military spokesperson said that the Israeli military does not comment on foreign reports.

Last month, Israeli airstrikes in central Syria killed at least 11 government troops and militias.

Israeli officials said that earlier missile attacks slowed Iran’s consolidation of its position in Syria.

Aleppo is the most populous city center in Syria and the commercial and industrial center before the war. Explosions have been heard throughout Aleppo.

Authorities said they were repairing the main power cable to the city after a direct attack cut off the power supply.

Shadow war

The airstrike was the first since the new Israeli government led by Prime Minister Naftali Bennet took office last month.

Bennett has pledged to maintain his predecessor’s policy of curbing Iran’s military expansion in Syria, and the Israeli defense agency said this development has disrupted the strategic balance in the region.

Western intelligence sources said that the Israeli attack on Syria was part of a shadow war approved by the United States and part of a policy to weaken Iran’s military power without triggering a substantial increase in hostilities.

Washington recently attacked facilities belonging to Iran-backed militias in eastern Syria in response to rocket attacks on US targets in Iraq.

Earlier this month, the Pentagon expressed its deep concern over a series of retaliatory attacks on American personnel stationed in the northeastern part of the country who were attacked by Iran-backed militias operating in the border areas of Iraq.

Last year, after helping Syrian President Bashar al-Assad (Bashar al-Assad) regain territories that were lost to the Islamic State of ISIL (ISIS), thousands of Iranian-backed militias have increased their presence across Syria. More and more.

Iran has been praised for repelling ISIL armed groups.
