Mumbai and its surrounding suburbs have a population of about 20 million people and have been hit by monsoon rains since Saturday. The Indian Meteorological Department said earlier on Sunday that it expects “moderate to heavy rain or thunderstorms” in the next two days.
Officials told Reuters that the authorities had reported 11 collapses of houses or walls in the Mumbai area.
On Sunday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi (Narendra Modi) said on Twitter that he was “sorrowed by the loss of life” and promised to provide financial compensation to the families of the victims.

In June, a building on the outskirts of Mallard, Mumbai, collapsed, killing 12 people.
In September, a three-story apartment building in Bhiwandi near Mumbai collapsed, killing 39 people.
