Tijuana (Border report) — Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard Casaubón (Marcelo Ebrard Casaubón) stated that if the United States does not reopen the southern border as soon as possible, it needs to reassess the meaning of basic travel restrictions.

Ebrard made these comments at a press conference this morning with Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

He also stated that his office has been lobbying US senators such as Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico to put pressure on the White House to lift restrictions.

He said: “If they do not plan to remove the entire border restrictions at the same time for health reasons, please help us understand what is necessary and non-essential.”

“We have set up a working group and hope that these senators can support Mexico’s aspirations, because the impact is very large and there is no reason now,” Ebrard said. “It doesn’t have to be the entire border. It can depend on the region and their circumstances. We will need an answer soon. For example, between Tijuana and San Diego, the same level of vaccination exists today.”
