The consumer watchdog said it will investigate whether Amazon and Google have been quickly removing false or misleading comments from their websites.

It will also investigate whether the two companies have been imposing sanctions or penalties on reviewers and businesses to prevent them from using false posts.

CMA CEO Andrea Coscelli said: “Our concern is that millions of online shoppers may be misled by reading fake reviews and then spend money based on these suggestions.

“Similarly, if certain companies can fake 5-star reviews to highlight their products or services, and law-abiding companies lose, it is also unfair.

“We are investigating concerns that Amazon and Google are not doing enough to prevent or delete false reviews to protect customers and honest businesses.

“It is important for these technology platforms to take responsibility. If we find that they are not doing enough, we are ready to take action.”
