Escondido (CNS)-A vigil was held at a park near Harmony Grove Village in Escondido at 7pm on Sunday to commemorate two detectives from the San Diego Police Department-a pair on Interstate 5 Married couple killed in a crash on the wrong direction.

SDPD detectives Ryan Park and Jamie Huntley-Park died in a violent frontal collision while speeding on the I-5 highway near the border of the United States and Mexico on Friday morning.

SDPD head David Nisleit stated that Park and Huntley-Park got married in 2016 after meeting at the SDPD Police Academy in April 2012. They were finally promoted to detectives together in July 2018.

“You can’t meet two better kids,” Nisleit said. “Their lives and careers are definitely on a very, very fast upward trend.”

“We are a big family in San Diego, so when the San Diego Police Department loses two members, it will hurt,” Nisleit added. “It hurt the department, it hurt the city.”

Hours after the accident, Mayor Todd Gloria issued a statement expressing regret over the deaths of the two detectives.

Gloria wrote: “It is with a heavy heart that we mourn the two San Diego Police Department officers who were unfortunately killed this morning.”

“In the coming days, we will learn more about these civil servants who proudly wear badges to ensure the safety of all of us, and we will pay tribute to their service.”
