A new report on the effectiveness of Canadian border restrictions stated that the federal government should terminate its mandatory three-day quarantine policy for air passengers returning to Canada in order to allow passengers to propose their own quarantine plan.
The Federal Government’s COVID-19 testing and screening expert advisory group included this and other recommendations in its fourth report, and the group has been studying land-air border measures to screen for COVID-19.
The report said that the mandatory three-day quarantine rules were flawed for many reasons, including the fact that Canadians chose to pay a fine of up to 3,000 Canadian dollars instead of going to the designated quarantine facility. This may not be a fact of following the quarantine precautions. .
The report said that the hotel quarantine program is expensive for the government and travelers. It also said that because the regulations requiring quarantine in government-approved facilities only apply to air passengers, some Canadians choose to fly to a US airport near the Canadian border crossing and complete the return journey by land.
The report also warned that the three-day quarantine stay “is inconsistent with the incubation period of COVID-19.”
On February 22, the federal government implemented new quarantine measures at the airport, requiring all air travelers returning home from non-essential travel to wait for the polymerase chain reaction test results (commonly referred to as “PCR tests-applicable to COVID-19.”
People arriving at the land border must be tested for COVID-19 when they enter the country, and then again after 14 days of isolation from their homes.
Measures will not prevent variants: report
When Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was asked today whether there is a need to eliminate quarantine hotels, he advised Canadians to look forward to them for a while.
“At some point we will be able to say [quarantine hotels should be eliminated]. When this point is reached, it will be based on the best advice of scientists, doctors and epidemiologists. “

The Premier of Ontario, Doug Ford, has been asking the federal government to extend the three-day quarantine rules to Canada’s land borders to prevent the import of the variants of concern.
The report did point out that the “previous border measures were not enough to prevent imports” variants, but he warned that tightening measures that target specific countries of interest may not work.
