Double-decker bus strikes Illinois Route 16 overpass killing two top riding passengers.
Mattoon, IL (JusticeNewsFlash.com)–A double-decker bus crashed into an overpass leaving two men dead, and numerous unanswered questions. The open-air bus was traveling on Illinois Route 16, when it crashed into a low lying overpass known to be a tight squeeze by semi truck drivers who frequent the highway. The Illinois Homepage reported the Coles County Coroner’s Office identified the victims as Justin Sleezer and Cameron Chana. Both passengers died from traumatic brain injuries suffered while traveling on the top of the open-air bus when the driver slammed into the overpass.
The Mattoon Police Department found the collision unique because the bus, passengers, and victims did not remain at the scene of the serious crash. Instead the bus driver rushed to a nearby hospital to seek emergency medical treatment for the injured passengers. Mattoon police were called 35 minutes after the fatal bus collision. Signage on the overpass bridge of Route 16, where the accident took place, clearly reads a clearance of 13 feet and 11 inches. The bus measures 13 feet 6 inches. Mattoon bus crash investigators are still trying to re-create the collision to determine exactly how the accident and fatal injuries occurred. It is unknown whether the two men were standing at the time of the wreck.
