UK – Revenge porn is poised to become a punishable offense in the UK. According to a press release from the Ministry of Justice, distributing private sexual images of individuals without their consent will be deemed an offense in the modified Criminal Justice and Courts Bill, which is currently making its way through Parliament. As stated in a report by WebProNews, the change will be the first time revenge porn will be made a specific criminal offense. The Ministry of Justice has said that the change will be applicable in both instances of online and offline image sharing. Justice Secretary Chris Grayling has stated of the issue, “The fact that there are individuals who are cruelly distributing intimate pictures of their former partners without their consent is almost beyond belief. We want those who fall victim to this type of disgusting behaviour to know that we are on their side and will do everything we can to bring offenders to justice.” Individuals who are convicted of the offense face a prison sentence of up to two years. State laws in the U.S. vary when it comes to dealing with revenge porn. There is currently no law in place that prohibits such actions on a federal level.
