Georgia – Bob Burns, the original drummer of the band Lynyrd Skynyrd recently died in a car crash in Georgia. According to a report by WebProNews, Burns was killed Friday at the age of 64 in the accident that occurred in Cartersville. The drummer reportedly hit a tree and mailbox in the late night single car crash following a performance.
Burns, also called Robert Lewis Burns Jr., helped form the band in the 1960s with his friends. The band went through several name changes being called My Backyard, The Noble Five, and One Percent before they settled on naming it after a teacher who refused to permit his male students to wear long hair. The band became known for hits like “Sweet Home Alabama.”
Burns quit the band in 1974 and was replaced by Artimus Pyle. He performed with Lynyrd Skynyrd; however, during the band’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame performance in 2006.
Pyle and others paid tribute to Burns on social media following his death.
