New York – Fans of Lucille Ball are calling for the removal of a statue that purportedly portrays an unflattering likeness of the late iconic star in her hometown. According to a WebProNews report, fans claim that the life-sized bronze statue that stands in Celoron, New York bears a closer resemblance to people like actor Steve Buscemi than Ball.
The statue has been a tourist attraction in the area since being erected in 2009. A Jamestown resident began a campaign in 2012 to have it removed. The fan’s effort was subsequently featured in a Yahoo! News story, sparking further calls for its removal.
The resident, who wished to remain anonymous, stated to CNN of the issue, “Lucille Ball was one of the most talented, beautiful, funny women who ever appeared on television; a pioneer, a giant of television. My only goal is to have a sculpture of her in Jamestown which does her justice.”
The resident further said, “This statue in Celoron is not fixable. I love my hometown and I Love Lucy. Let’s get a new statue that is a real tribute to her memory as the Comedy Queen of Television.”
Celoron Mayor Scott Schrecengost is reportedly on the side of the peeved fans.
