Mississippi – Scammers have reportedly made attempts to profit off of the death of Mississippi burn victim Jessica Chambers. As reported by WebProNews, one person who enacted a campaign to raise money in Chambers’ name was arrested and charged with fraud.
Attorney General Jim Hood is quoted in the report as stating of the woman, Janet Posey, “Family members and friends of the family brought their concerns about the site to our attention… She was trying to get people to give money and acting as if she was a family member. We got online, found her internet protocol address, she tried to cover it up. Our investigators will continue to work and see who else is involved.”
Other attempts have also reportedly been made to help Chambers’ family with funeral costs and other expenses. As noted in the report, a family friend set up a campaign with GoFundMe that has raised an estimated $21,000; however, according to Chambers’ sister her first medical bill alone was in excess of $13,000.
