South Korea – Pope Francis recently visited South Korea, celebrating Mass before tens of thousands of people on Friday, asking that they reject materialism. As reported by CBS News, the pope also met with survivors of the Sewol ferry disaster, which occurred in April.

The captain and several crew members who were on the ferry are now facing criminal charges in connection with the maritime disaster. Preliminary hearings are now underway amid an investigation into the incident prior to the trials of those charged.

As noted in the report, anger over the tragedy, which resulted in the deaths of over 300 people, many teens, still persists as protestors continue to seek answers from the government.

The president of South Korea expressed hope that the visit by the pope to the country could help it “heal.”
