Salem Steel Plant Accident Kills New Millennium Employee

Salem, VA — A workplace accident at a Salem steel operation killed an employee when an 8,000 pound steel truss fell and pinned the man. The fatal work-related accident occurred around 9:45 a.m. at New Millennium on Diuguids Lane on Monday, March 26, 2012, reported Roanoke.com.

Workers were reportedly unloading steel trusses from a tractor-trailer when one of the trusses, which is about the length of the tractor-trailer and weighed an estimated 8,000 pounds, fell and pinned an employee by his legs.

Responding emergency crews rescued the man, who was then airlifted by helicopter to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for medical treatment. The man’s injuries later proved fatal and he was pronounced dead.

The identity of the victim is being withheld at this time.

New Millennium Building Systems and the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry are investigating the fatal workplace accident.

New Millennium manufactures and sells steel joists, beams and decking used to construct shopping centers, big-box stores, schools, churches, and light industrial and manufacturing buildings. It is a subsidiary of Indiana-based Steel Dynamics Inc., Roanoke.com reported.
