Wyoming – A lawsuit over the death of a hiker in India is due to be heard in a Wyoming court. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the suit was filed by Elizabeth Brenner against National Outdoor Leadership School following the 2011 death of her 20-year-old son Thomas Plotkin. The case was moved to U.S. District court in Cheyenne last week.

Plotkin had taken a backpacking trip to India that was led by the school. Brenner claims in the lawsuit that the school was negligent in the death of her son. The suit says Plotkin died after slipping on a wet rock and plunging down a ravine. His body has never been recovered.

Bruce Palmer, a spokesman for NOLS, recently stated the risks associated with its programs are explained to students in advance, and a statement had been signed by Plotkin acknowledging awareness of potential dangers prior to his going on the trip.

The lawsuit is seeking unspecified damages.
