Utah – Troy James Knapp, the man who became known by many in Utah as the “Mountain Man” after years of living in the woods, was sentenced to prison on Monday. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Knapp pleaded guilty to federal weapon and multiple state burglary charges, and was sentenced to one to 15 years on each of the 10 burglary counts.
Knapp was reportedly identified by surveillance in 2012 after years of investigation into cabin burglaries in Utah. In 2013, he shot at a helicopter transporting federal agents during the process of removing him from a home close to a mountain reservoir in Manti-LaSal National Forest. He was subsequently taken in by authorities.
Jay Winward, one of Knapp’s attorneys, is quoted by the AP as stating of his lifestyle, “There is an admiration for somebody who chooses to live off the land, because he does it while the rest of us wouldn’t. Even if he needs a little help from some cabin owners.”
Knapp’s state sentences are set to run concurrently, along with his federal sentence.
