Pittsburgh – A settlement has been reached between the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium and the family of a two-year-old who was mauled to death by a group of African painted dogs. As reported by UPI, the terms of the agreement announced Monday were not disclosed.
Maddox Derkosh was killed after falling into the dogs’ enclosure while viewing the animals on a platform with his mother. The family filed a lawsuit against the zoo alleging it had received warnings from employees about the potential dangers of the exhibit. In its response to the claims, the zoo blamed the child’s mother for the sitting her son on a railing before he fell.
A total of 11 of the wild dogs attacked the toddler. As noted in the report, African painted dogs live in in packs largely consisting of alpha males.
