Phoenix – An Arizona inmate who has advanced breast cancer was released from jail on Thursday after making a plea deal. As reported by KSAZ, Ruth Alvarez, an undocumented mother jailed for using false identification to obtain employment, can now go forward with a mastectomy she’s scheduled to have one week after her release.
Alvarez spent 17 days behind bars after being arrested on April 1. Due to her crime being a non-bondable offense in Arizona, her lawyer made a personal plea to the county attorney to get her released.
Jose Penalosa is quoted as stating of the deal reached in her case, “In this particular case, because of the concerns here, Mr. Montgomery offered to allow her to plead guilty to a misdemeanor offense. Time served and unsupervised probation for one year. So the interests of justice were protected and also the interest of Ruth’s health.”
Alvarez, who still faces the possibility of deportation, is further quoted as stating, “I just apologize for the mistake I did and I just pray for God that he can touch his heart and let me go out and keep going with my life and do whatever I have to do.”
