Connecticut – Connecticut is now the first state to pass legislation making the minimum wage $10.10, which matches the number U.S. President Barack Obama suggested to Congress in his plea for the consideration of a national minimum wage increase. As reported by Reuters, the measure was passed one day after being approved by state legislators.

Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy signed the legislation into law in a New Britain diner where he had previously appeared with Obama and other Democrats making the push for states to increase the minimum wage.

Malloy is quoted in the report as stating of signing the bill, “This is just a step in moving people in the right direction… We will be lifting people out of poverty in the state of Connecticut. Increasing the minimum wage is not just good for workers, it’s also good for business.”

State House Republican spokesman Patrick O’Neil is further quoted as stating of his party’s opposition to the measure, “In Bridgeport, the state’s largest city, there is a 50 percent unemployment rate among teens ages 16-19. If they can’t get a job at $8.70 an hour, what will it be like when the rate goes up?…This is just going to cause employers who create jobs in the state to hire even fewer people.”
