Florida Governor sets execution for man convicted of murder

Florida – Florida Governor Rick Scott signed an order last week for the execution of a man convicted for the rape and murder of a 9-year-old boy. As reported by Reuters, the execution of Juan Carlos Chavez has been scheduled for February 12 in accordance with the order signed on Thursday.

Chavez, has admitted to the 1995 kidnap, rape, and murder of Jimmy Ryce. The child was kidnapped at gunpoint getting off of a school bus. The Jimmy Ryce Act, was passed unanimously in 1998 in Florida, subjecting convicted sex offenders to a possible indefinite civil commitment following completion of their prison terms.

Jimmy’s father, Don Ryce, is quoted in the report as stating of the execution, “I hope this sends a message to predators that this behavior will not go unpunished.” The child’s mother, Claudine, passed away in 2009.
