France – A French climber found a treasure trove while scaling a glacier off Mont Blanc. As reported by AFP, the man found a metal box with more than $300,000 worth of jewels that had been buried for decades during his climb and turned it in to authorities.
Local gendarmerie chief Sylvain Merly is quoted as stating to AFP of the climber, “This was an honest young man who very quickly realised that they belonged to someone who died on the glacier… He could have kept them but he preferred to give them to the police.”
In accordance with French law, if the owners or heirs of the jewels cannot be identified they may be returned to the mountaineer.
