Washington – A researcher who was cited by Secretary of State John Kerry as well as Senator John McCain during congressional talks about US intervention in Syria has been fired from a non-partisan think tank. As reported by Reuters, Elizabeth O’Bagy was accused of misrepresenting her record and terminated by the Institute.

O’Bagy, who had been a senior analyst at the Institute for the Study of War, wrote an opinion piece that was published in the Wall Street Journal stating that moderate opposition forces were leading the fight against the Syrian government, which was cited by Kerry and McCain during congressional hearings last week.

The Institute stated of O’Bagy on Wednesday on its website it had “learned and confirmed that, contrary to her representations, Ms. Elizabeth O’Bagy does not in fact have a Ph.D. degree from Georgetown University. ISW has accordingly terminated Ms. O’Bagy’s employment, effective immediately.”

A State Department senior official stated in reference to Kerry citing of O’Bagy’s work that he had presumed her credentials had been accurately represented by media outlets.
