Washington – Senate Democrats moved ahead this week with bills that ignore mandated spending cuts, adding $91 million to the “spending cap.” As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the cap is stated to equal what was called for under a 2011 budget and debt deal as well as a plan the Senate approved in March; however, the congressional appropriations process involving 12 bills is an issue being debated between the parties.

Top panel Republican Sen. Richard Shelby of Alabama is quoted by the AP as stating, “The majority’s top-line number ignores the law and puts us on the path to another sequester… If enacted, a discretionary spending level of $1.058 trillion would trigger an automatic cut that is 65 percent larger than the 2013 sequester.”

Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash. is further quoted as stating of the matter, “While the House plan tries to avoid cuts to defense at the expense of infrastructure and education, they won’t be able to protect the Pentagon without an agreement… $552 billion in defense spending would be sequestered back down to $498 billion unless we can get a bipartisan deal.”
