Washington – The Education Department is reportedly giving $1.3 million in recovery aid to schools in Newtown, Connecticut following fatal shootings that resulted in the deaths of 26 students and educators in December. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Education Secretary Arne Duncan was purportedly set to announce the School Emergency Response to Violence grant while visiting the state on Friday.
Duncan is quoted by the AP as stating in prepared remarks, “This tragedy has forever changed the entire Newtown community and our country…While we continue efforts to enact President Obama’s comprehensive approach to make our schools and communities safer, we want to do whatever we can to support ongoing recovery efforts and ensure this community has the resources it needs to meet the needs of its teachers, students and families.”
