Beijing, China – Ten men were sentenced by a Beijing court Tuesday in connection with illegal “black jail” abuses. As reported by Christian Science Monitor, the men were accused of seizing and detaining citizens in an illegal “black jail” and sentenced to between 6 months and two years imprisonment.

Tang Hongxin, an attorney who has provided assistance to victims of illegal imprisonment, is quoted in the report as stating, “This is a good start in the legal fight against black jails… I hope the government will step up this fight” after ignoring the problem for years.”

Prominent human rights lawyer Li Fangping is further quoted as stating of the problem in the country with illegal detentions, “So long as stability maintenance remains unchanged, illegal detentions cannot be eradicated, only reduced to a certain degree… Petitioners are still being illegally detained … and no official has ever been punished for it.”
